Beta-Glucan rich Barley Boosts Immune System

Mom’s Barley Soup for spring colds and winter meals boosts immune system with beta glucan. Free recipe video (below) shows how easy it is to make. It’s my vegetarian adaptation of a wonderful soup my mom made when we were kids. 175 clinical studies on everyday herbs and spices can’t be wrong.

About Beta Glucan

Moms will love this soup when they learn how easy it is to make and how protective. Those pursuing natural cancer treatment will love knowing a simple everyday food such as barley is one of the highest in beta glucan.

A powerful immune modulator, beta glucan is found in barley, certain mushrooms, oats and yeast. Science understanding the value of beta glucan is relatively new, though during the 1918 flu pandemic a woman homeopath used barley broth to save many lives. Beta-glucan has been shown to benefit cancer treatment.

Beta glucan is also believed to have cholesterol-lowering effects and to assist with blood sugar levels. In 1997, the FDA allowed oat bran to be registered as the first cholesterol-reducing food to include 3 grams beta-glucan daily.

Healthy Fats vs Fat Free and Beneficial fats such as Olive Oil and Coconut Oil

We often have to educate ourselves to eat healthy fats such as olive and coconut oils again – in a culture that has gone crazy about “fat free.” Healthy fats are essential to hormone production and vital functions of body, brain, nerves, hair and skin, as discussed in this video on Vegetarian Weight Loss. We may have a distorted view of fat in the diet because we live in a culture where there is too much saturated and trans fat in many foods used for flavor, filler and to get us “addicted.”If we’re health conscious we want to get away from these things – yet need to re-educate ourselves to consume healthy fats.

Let’s take a look at:

healthy fats: olive oil and coconut oil

fat relating to weight loss and nutrition

fats to avoid such as trans and saturated fats, margarine and commercial vegetable oils

We require regular intake of healthy fats to create energy and burn the “bad” fat. This becomes particularly noticeable when we lower our intake of animal foods. Often we think we need protein when what we really need is healthy fat. Olive oil and avocado contain mono-saturated oils, which science is now demonstrating lower “bad” LDL cholesterol and raise the “good” HDL. Here is a great salad recipe with raw foodist Dennis, age 63, using virgin olive oil and avocado.

Scientists have identified a compound in olive oil called oleuropein which prevents the LDL cholesterol from sticking to the inside of arteries, thus lowering blood pressure and reducing the risk of heart attack. Olive oil has shown through many generations and ancient tradition in the Mediterranean to be at the core of health producing dietary practices with statistically lower incidences of cancer and heart disease. Here’s a great site to learn more about nutritious olive oil.

Coconut Oil – Many Benefits

Coconut oil was given a bad rap in the 1950s when research was being done on saturated fats. What we really need to avoid like the plague is processed fats such as shortening and margarine – which contain trans-fat and are large contributors to Alzheimers and cardiovascular disease.

Coconut oil contains monolauren, a fatty acid that has antiviral antibacterial qualities, and is effective against microorganisms such as candida. It contains medium chain fatty acids and is absorbed and burned for energy, rather than going to storage in the fat cells. Monolauren is thought to improve cognitive function in type 1 diabetes and hypoglycemia, as well as improve cardiovascular health.
Coconut oil has also been found to have a positive effect on the thyroid, raising metabolism for leanness and weight loss. Be sure to buy the most natural, cold processed coconut oil and olive oil.
You will find these beneficial fats make your soups much more tasty, nourishing and sustaining. I often add them near the end of cooking time so they are basically raw when we eat them; however it’s also beneficial to add some during cooking time as the oil assists to draw some of the compounds to be more available from the herbs and spices. Toasted sesame oil adds a wonderful flavor and is part of the macrobiotic tradition. Shown to be beneficial for heart and kidneys it contains antioxidants, is protective of DNA, raises interleukin levels (disease fighting component of the blood), and is cancer protective particularly agains skin cancer and leukemia.

Natural food science sheds a new light beyond traditional eating practices. We should be very cautious around the consumption of margarine, a hydrogenated fat containing nickel, particularly clogging to arteries, and though most cooking oils are polyunsaturated, they are very toxic to the system. Here’s an excellent article on Fat Soluble Vitamins.

ABOUT DAIRY – If you consume dairy, please BUY ORGANIC. If you haven’t yet seen it, watch the Michael Moore movie, The Corporation. This movie has great insights on disease in commercial dairy production and manipulation of information by the food producers associations. Again, vote with your grocery bill when you can for organic food; it may cost a little more now but less in the long haul. Organic dairy products are high in CLA, conjugated linoleic acid, important to helping the body burn fat and preserve muscle tissue as noted in this article.

Food Inc by Michael Pollan and Eric Schlosser of Fast Food Nation

Star studded cast of this enlightening documentary includes best selling authors Michael Pollan of Omnivore’s Dilemma and Eric Schlosser of Fast Food Nation. DON’T MISS IT! Even a critic of off base natural food suppliers, Michael Pollan replies to Whole Foods. Catch trailer of Fast Food Nation. I’m Outraged Again at things I knew and THRILLED beyond words that this incredibly well-done exposé is available for all to see. Excellent job!

Wake Up. Educate Yourself. Don’t Take Your Lifestyle for Granted.

Why go for natural and organic food? Eric Schlosser hits the mark as Food Inc reveals little known facts:

4-5 Large corporations manufacture the majority of commercially produced food

Chickens raised in dark tunnels crowded so they can barely move, are raised on food laced with antibiotics and bred to grow breasts so large they can barely take a single step in their own waste

Cattle raised on feedlot corn rather than, grass, stand ankle deep in their own waste and cultivate a new and virulent form of toxic ecoli bacteria, having caused the death of at least one child

3 tastes: salt, sugar and fat are incorporated into all packaged foods, none found in such concentrated form in nature

90% packaged foods contain corn, predominantly high fructose corn syrup, and a passel of other unpronounceable additives

1 in 3 Americans born after 2000 will contract type II diabetes due to commercial food consumption

Mansanto’s genetically engineered seeds are environmentally devastating, and they brutally ruin farmers who don’t conform

Let What You See Change the Way You Eat.

Buy Organic Food

Search Out Local Natural Food, Produce and Meat

Grow a Garden

Become Vegetarian at Least 2-3 Days per Week

It costs more in the short term to eat well than to eat badly, but when you Add Up Environmental Costs, Societal Costs and Health Costs – there’s no comparison.

Walmart committed to buying dairy with no growth hormones because someone worked with them to realize how important it was!!! Help educate for change.

We are like "shooting stars" completing the first decade of the 21st century and already into the next. Amazing that something as simple as lifestyle habits can make such a big difference for us and all life on earth!

Good for Us / Better for the Planet?

Upon complaining I hadn’t heard from his sister over the holidays my nephew said to me, “We’re getting to be an ADD / ADHD culture. Everyone’s running around so busy we don’t pause and think about what we’re doing or take time to communicate any more.” “Quite insightful for a young man finding his way in the world,” I noted. Taking the time to reflect and consider how, why and what we’re doing can make a huge difference for both us and planet Earth.

We’re like “shooting stars” completing the first decade of the 21st century and already into the next. Amazing simple lifestyle habits can make a huge difference for us and all life on earth!

Let’s be remembered as Radiant Stars when our kids, grandkids and theirs look back and say Mom/Dad/Grandma/Grandpa/Uncle/Aunt/Ancestor lived a long healthy life, shared their wisdom with me and chose an Earth-friendly lifestyle so I could have a future and be here now!!!

Lifestyle Choices Affect both Us and the Earth

The more aware we become, affects of lifestyle on our long-term health and planetary well-being become apparent. In response to “germs becoming antibiotic resistant” and other such unsavory subjects, let’s make our food choices healthful, delicious and exciting.

It takes just a small movement of the rudder
to reach a very different place on the shore.

Let’s consider food choices for the coming decade that may well contribute to our own long life, good health, and shift the burden over-population and overuse of resources is putting on our dear planet.
A friend recently quoted an awesome magazine headline seen in local co-op, “We need to quit looking at the earth as a resource and start looking at it as our home.” Wow! What a concept! Jill Richardson of Firedoglake says, “Your diet can be as potent a way to fight global warming as your choice of vehicle.”

3 Food Commitments for 2010

1. Buy Local Organic: reduce transportation and production costs, eat healthier, support your local economy, vote with your fork

As fuel prices rise in the coming year (I’ve heard $4/gallon predicted) so will costs of transportation and production. It might take a little research to find out where you can purchase local, organic food, but it’s an empowering way to fight back. Ride a bike to the farmers market, ask around, get to know the neighborhood. Free yourself from dependency on the supermarket.

For those who have time, Barbara Kingslover’s Animal, Vegetable, Miracle: A Year of Food Life is an inspiring story of how she and her family shifted their views and experience of food. Most communities have some local food production. Consider neighborhood or community gardens, grow your own or support those who are already putting forth the effort.

2. Reduce Use of Animal Foods

We could argue all day about whether we should eat meat or become vegetarian. The truth is we must be authentically ourselves, and walk the path to which we are drawn. Those raised eating meat might like to change, yet it may seem a difficult proposition. Others have become vegan or vegetarian, all raw or cooked, and find it joyful and fun to follow a plant based diet.

There is no reason to judge what someone chooses to eat; for we will grow and change as we become ready. Meanwhile the facts demonstrate reducing use of animal foods can make us more healthy and the Earth, too! If you’re not ready to give up meat, try going vegetarian 2-3 days per week, buy organic and to offset the extra cost, eat less.

Healthier for Us: recent bestseller, The China Study reports on 35 year study in China with 8,000 people in 65 counties, concluding maximum 7% animal foods in the diet either reversed or eliminated all degenerative conditions.

Healthier for the Earth: Over 40% of carbon monoxide comes from feedlots. Rainforests (our main source of new oxygen) are being clearcut at an alarming rate to graze cattle for companies such as MacDonalds.

3. Eat Simply, Eat Whole Foods

Get your own stash of whole foods put away in the pantry. There’s a SHOPPING LIST in the back of my Super Immunity Secrets ebook which you can get still right now for $10 off the original price – just $7.99 with Coupon Code – NewYearSale Click on the ebook image to the right and follow instructions!

Happy New Year! I Resolve to be MORE Lean, Fit and Healthy! (doesn’t everyone?)

Wow! Can you believe another DECADE has gone by? It seems like just yesterday was the turning of the Millennium! The way time flies reminds me how SUPER IMPORTANT it is to take care of Ourselves. Another Year gone by. Did We Actually DO What We Committed To LAST New Year’s Eve???

My TOP 10 Best New Year Resolutions:

1. Create Statements to Envision Your Perfect Self!

I have a favorite saying to Visualize my Body at its Lean, Fit Best:
“I Am a Lean, Mean, Muscle Machine.”
You may chuckle, but this gives
me a quick phrase to visualize what I choose (rather than what I don’t want).

Remember, as we ride the wave of human consciousness,
what we place our Attention on is Called into Being.
Always envision and put attention on the best we can imagine.

“Imagination is more powerful than knowledge.” (Albert Einstein)
Quantum physics tells us when attention is placed upon particles
they move into form! How powerful our attention is!!!

2. NO MORE Negative Thoughts!

Creative Mind is much more powerful than our Logical Mind.
The Logical mind may “argue” “oh, but I’m fat or out of shape”
or whatever Nasty Negative Thoughts we have wallowed in BUT~

3. Use Your Creative Mind to Envision Perfection!

Move molecules and Call Into Being our Perfect State!
Action follows!

4. Get a Source of Regular Encouragement, Inspiration!

Because Weight Loss is so big for most of us I’d like to share about some friends of mine who transformed their bodies.

Scott Tousignant, BHK, CFC and his wife Angie are just regular folks. They realized one day they were out of shape and made a commitment to get into the best shape of their lives. After just few months of short but consistent daily workouts their bodies were dramatically changed into lean, cut physiques. They are creators of Unstoppable Fat loss, “What separates the people who achieve fat loss success from those who struggle to lose weight.” He has also authored 2 books that are transforming the bodies of people around the world. “The Fit Chic” and “The Fat Bastard” not only contain a FULL YEAR of workouts, they provide intense motivation to drive you to fat loss success.

Gals

Check out the changes in Scott and Angie and know this could be YOU:

5. Be Enthusiastic – Take ACTION Now!

6. Know You Can! Get Off the proverbial Butt and DO IT!

7. Good Thinks Don’t Happen by Accident!

No that is not a typo. It’s time to LIVE AN INTENTIONAL LIFE.
How we live begins with how we think about who we are, what we’re
doing and where we’re going.

8. Our Choices Every Minute Matter! We Are as Healthy As We Choose to BE.

We must choose to not let our lives be driven by the ridiculous things that shout at us around every corner (you know what they are); and set in motion a driving force that allows us to discover a healthy fun-filled enjoyable life to share with friends and family.

We are racing against the clock to keep from ending up as a statistic, dying prematurely of illness such as cancer, heart disease or one of many other degenerative illnesses.

Many Lose Their Health in Search of Wealth,
then Spend Their Wealth to Save Their Health

Learn to make healthy choices, make the minutes of our lives count and preserve the incredible gift of life to “live long and prosper.”

9. Living Well Takes Effort

Okay, it may require taking a few steps back out of the fast food, easy street of our modern “fossil fuel” civilization. Prepare good food at home. Grow a garden. Take a walk. Smile a loved ones. Discover interesting conversations that go beyond the tv to inspire us.

When we feel better we become better people. Shop at the natural grocery, buy organic, support local growers, grow a garden. Breathe. Walk, move, smile more. Say YES!

10. Learn How to Take Action on Your Own Behalf to Be Your Best

What have you always wanted to do? Learn Spanish? Take Karate? Ride a bike 100 miles? Visit a National Park? Go to a foreign land? Learn to cook good food? Be a marksman? Bounce your child on your knee? Have Enough? See Peace On Earth?

Take a class, read a book, join a group; renew capability to be our best. No man/woman is an island, we learn from one another, enrich lives by sharing, and we grow when we seek wisdom. Commit this year to learn something new you can put into practice in your life to Be a Better You!!!

Friends of the Earth urge Go Vegetarian at Least Two Days a Week to Help Save the Planet

In order to feed our rapidly expanding population without doing more damage to the atmosphere, adopting a vegetarian diet at least a few days per week goes a long way to help reduce greenhouse gasses caused by cattle production and eliminates destruction of essential rainforest, according to Friends of the Earth.

“Sir Paul McCartney, Lord Stern and the UN have suggested people may to stop eating meat completely in order to prevent catastrophic climate change.”
