Music Makes Us Smarter!
Science Daily reports that music is thought to increase intelligence and immune system health. New York Academy of Sciences indicates that listening to personally enjoyable music increases cognitive skills and enhances memory. Musicians were found to have more grey matter in the right hemisphere, and those who listen to classical music, particularly Mozart fared better on cognitive tests. Other findings in Neurosciences and Music II indicate positive effects on immune system health. Parents found attending musical events made their children better students. Adolescents involved in music do better in school, with a positive effect on reading and math.
Favorite Tunes are Heart Healthy and Make Us Run Farther
Studies have also shown that listening to our favorite music can reduce stress in heart disease, decreasing blood pressure, heart rate, and levels of anxiety. Marathon world record holder Haile Gebrselassie tells of strong links between music and cardiovascular exercise. Select music can significantly increase physical endurance and make the experience of cardio exercise more positive. Music enhanced endurance by 15% and improved ‘feeling states’ of exercisers, getting greater pleasure from exercise. Exercisers feel more positive even when they are working out at high intensity – close to physical exhaustion.
